Mondays in the states are not nearly as rad as Mondays in Paris. For some reason I just love this day of the week. Today was a day of cozy sweaters, French film watching, wine drinking along the Seine with my sweet roommate and hair dying! That's right, I'm seriously brunette again and I totally dig it. Now, Qianjin, Taryn, Jane and I are off to salsa at the neighborhood bar. But before we go anywhere, Classixx is ringing throughout our halls. Dig it.

My luck is at an all time high. Between fashion week runway shows and events, finding ten euro on the ground at a bar, and running around Paris with a group of local Parisians until five in the morning, Paris is surely winning over my heart. While Fashion Week is coming to an end, the excitement of all things la mode are hardly wearing off. Tonight Jane and I will be heading over to L'Eclaireur for the ASVOFF4 Cocktail event, which is a Fashion Week event previewing Diane Prenet's film "A Shaded View of Fashion." Diane Pernet has many titles, including designer, blogger and fashion editor for Elle.com and VogueParis.com. Needless to say, tonight holds many opportunities for fantastic photo-ops and endless inspiration for costumery! I'll be sure to post pictures here as soon as possible. Le Jardin de Tuileries is one of my favorite places to relax in the sun and read a book on weekend mornings or lazy afternoons. Today however, my tranquil spot became quite energetic, as the Viktor & Rolf fashion show was taking place in the Espace Ephemere Tuileries at one 1:30. I hurried over to photograph the decadently dressed and admire the creative ensembles on the attendees. Here are some of my favorite photographs. Enjoy!

Lutz Runway Show, Paris Fashion Week 2011

This has to be the best week to be living in Paris, as fall Fashion Week has consumed every inch of the city. After attending the Lutz runway show last night, I literally saw one of the models on the metro. And she was just as stunning off the runway. The designer created an energetic line that combined geometric structure with playful details and pops of color. Quite perfect for a glamorous girl in Paris.

I'm off to the Lutz runway show on day two of Paris Fashion week! Paris is currently experiencing a crazy heat wave, making the Parisian costumery of fall Fashion Week attendees even more creative! What happened to sweaters and tights for fall?? I guess Indian summers follow me wherever I live.

As FW gets rolling, Paris is full of beautifully dressed individuals whose limits know no end (talk about serious inspiration!). Because there is probably no better time of year to do so, my girlfriends and I are planning to sip on cocktails while people watching from a side walk cafe after the show. Lucky us!

Paris: Stealing My Heart

I finally got the feeling that I have been waiting for since August 21, my first day of living in Paris: the feeling that I simply can't imagine leaving Paris in December. My life has become the ideal balance of routine and frivolity. Normal things like eating oatmeal for breakfast, going for a run in the afternoon, and making dinner while chatting with a roommate remain the same, while stumbling upon a new cafe, navigating the grocery store, or trying my very best to understand what the guy at the bar is saying to me in French are new, difficult and exciting. While I miss my bed, dogs, family and friends tremendously, I finally feel like Paris has captured a little piece of my heart, permanently. I say this as I sit on my terribly hard cot-like bed, connected to the Internet via Ethernet cords while my favorite group of 13 year olds scream in French outside of my window. Clearly my skin is a bit thicker than it was even a week ago, when this bed seemed much too hard, the Internet was far too slow and the teenagers were driving me mad. I'm thrilled that these things now go unnoticed, or in the case of the teenagers, they make me giggle (they are currently trying to sing the lyrics of "G-6").

In the midst of getting politely acquainted with Paris, I have stumbled upon the very best vintage stores. Most notably Coiffeur and Tilt Vintage in the Marais, a fashionable, bohemian shopping district in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Coiffeur is a dream come true: fur coats for 35-65 euro, vintage Levi shorts for 10 euro and an unreal assortment of leather purses from 10-15 euro. So far, I have only come home with a plaid blazer that is perfect for the fall weather that is slowly rolling over Paris. Second, Tilt Vintage, only a couple of blocks away from Coiffeur, is stocked with sequined dresses, cozy, oversized sweaters, and a killer selection of leather boots, all around 25 euro. Needless, to say I am quite delighted as shopping is my favorite past time. My conclusion is that Paris vintage delivers on all levels: quality, quantity, and most importantly in this ville chere, price. I'll be sending boxes home and taking another bag home come December.

And while I am settling in well, I miss my little beach town of Santa Barbara quite a bit. I certainly miss watching McKenna dance whenever there is music on, sitting on Ashley's bed chit chatting, and raiding Miss Mia's closet for something to wear out when my closet just doesn't have anything to provide. And Sima, my most reliable, ready to go-out friend! So girls, please know that even though my room is the size of a large walk-in closet, there is always room for you in Paris (Listening to Mine is Yours seriously makes me want to fly yall out here. But I can't. Because I'm not a millionaire. Yet.). And of course, you too Kooper. I miss your cozy house, Rose Cafe dates and your pretty face! Get ready to hit the town when I return. I'm a seasoned veteran when it comes to purchasing wine now: always pick what there is little stock of because that means it's popular and delicious. :)

Off to get ready for a night out near the Pantheon and the Sorbonne (I know, I'm super lucky to say something like that..).

A Week Deep in Paris

I just can't seem to find the words to adequately explain my first week of living in Paris. Maybe it's because it seemed to flashed by in a hot second, or maybe it is because this whole experience is quite surreal, but either way my love for Paris has grown exponentially. After living a very laid back life in various beach towns in California, this life of late nights, cafes full of quick French chatter and constant bread eating is an ideal change.

After catching a flu bug during my flights getting to Europe, my first couple of days in the city of lights were uneventful. But a mere reminder that I only have four months in this beautiful city, spurred an instant recovery, or maybe just a willingness to get out while feeling less than healthy. Paris seems to have that effect on me: every minute is a minute that I need to be out, exploring, drinking wine and seeing something historical. No time to waste being sick!

So far, Paris is giving me good reason to stay here and never look back. Montmarte, le Tour Eiffel lightshow and chocolate croissants alone, are making me forget about sunny California beaches and 70 degree Chirstmases. Not to mention that every person I have met, both native Parisiens and transplants, have been nothing but perfectly nice and welcoming. You have the flu? Let me get you some fruit and a cup of tea. You were sick? Do you need an extra blanket for your bed? Sorry family and friends, I am getting courted by a very desirable partner.

More later, but for now I am off to start my birthday week celebrations at a local pub with new friends. I really can't believe I am living this life right now. I reveling in my luck.

Found: Vintage Treasures

The number of days until I arrive in Paris is dwindling down... rapidly. Today was the first day where it was hard to eat food due to the constant flutter of butterflies in my stomach. While my nerves are increasing, so is my excitement. This past weekend I found an amazing bay area thrift store, which allowed me to buy multiple cashmere (yes, cashmere) sweaters, a beautiful coat circa 1950, and the most needed Paris clothing article, a tan trench coat. Best of all I spent under $70 for fifteen items. The better portion of these items are being dry cleaned, but there will soon be many pictures of these treasures amongst a beautiful French scenery. Thrift Town gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.

And after spending all of yesterday scouring booth after booth at the Alameda Vintage Flea Market with my mama, I walked away with a vintage cashmere skirt and a flapper-esce hat circa 1930. It was the best day of hunting and browsing, even though the weather felt more like fall than summer (but it made it much easier to buy much needed wintery items rather than levi cut-offs and summer dresses!). Cutest hat ever, right? I can't wait to put all of my new cold weather clothes to use while exploring many European cities. Until then, Ill be wearing some of my finds (black cashmere sweater and velvet blazer) to the Giants game tonight, considering San Francisco always has far too cold of weather. This may be the first time I am welcoming of 50 degree weather during the month of August.

As my time working at A Tropical Affair concludes, I am becoming nostalgic, excited... and greedy for more lingerie! For the past two and a half years I have spent endless hours with great co-workers, trying on and spending far too much money on lacy luxuries that a college budget can afford, and learning about designers that were once foreign and now a staple. This past weekend my co-worker and friend, Cindy, helped me solidify exactly what I needed to take home with me before my last day. On a whim I tried on a stunning Huit bra and, of course, fell in love.

It is absolutely true that the French create the most detailed, figure flattering under garments. Why I did not figure this out sooner I will never know. But I am absolutely sure that the Huit China Girl set is coming home with me next week. After breaking my trusty black sandals in Newport a couple of weekends ago, my shoe selection suddenly seems much more sparse (don't feel too sorry for me, they were over two years old). It is difficult to dress for summer weather when my go-to sandals are gone. Therefore, I am on the hunt for a pair of new, neutral, flat sandals as a replacement. So far, these Sam Edelman sandals are the front runner. I love the low gladiator style. On trend in an understated manner. I can dig it. I hope they are as comfortable as they are cute!

Loafers, Leather and Lots of Luck

Really great things are happening to me as I continue to prepare for my trip to Paris. Last week I traveled home to bay area (with my teensy, tiny Honda civic packed to the brim) to get my French Visa, bring some un-needed items to my parents' houses and visit with my family before I began summer school. My appointment with the French consulate was on Tuesday morning and by Thursday evening my visa had been expedited and delivered to my house in Santa Barbara. Lady luck? It's high season for visa applications so the sight of my visa on my living room coffee table was a huge shock! I'm taking it as a good omen for my travels.

And even better, the luck didn't stop there. After my appointment with the French consulate on Tuesday I romped around San Francisco, visiting various vintage fabric stores and the most amazing Goodwill I have ever come across. I know many people have a stigma against the Goodwill, as it has a connotation with dirty, overused clothes. Not the case here. The goodwill at Mission St. was perfectly organized (with appropriate labels of each rack, ranging from vintage women's blouse to blazers and long length dresses) and clean. A dream come true for an avid thrift shopper like me! While I was tempted to buy many, many things I limited myself the perfect pair of menswear inspired loafers. I had been on the hunt, looking at loafers at Nordstrom, Piperlime, et cetera and never took the plunge. Thank goodness because these kicks are in pristine condition and cost me a mere $10. I know, outrageous.

And the last bit of fun news: I made an awesome canvas and leather clutch for summer time use (with minimal help from my mama!). To be completely honest, it was rather simple. Even attaching the zipper.

As I am showered with this luck and good fortune the butterflies in my stomach are increasing. The countdown to Paris as well as my summer of intense summer courses, farmers market frequenting and lots of time in the sun continues. Now I'm off to see Midnight in Paris with some of my best girlfriends and eat too much buttery popcorn. No complaints.

Pre-Departure Purchases: Week One

So, I can't believe it but I leave for Paris in a little under 15 weeks. About once a week I have an ah-ha, revelation moment where the reality of my adventure sets in. It's usually at work and I will suddenly blurt out "Oh my god, I'm going to Paris in three months!" As I prepare for the amazing adventure that lies ahead I am collecting things that will be necessary while I am romping around Paris. First thing that I checked off of my checklist: a new wallet. I love my sparkly, gold wallet that I bought in NYC last summer but I broke the zipper about two weeks after returning to Santa Barbara. Lame. However, I found a darling, vintage French travel wallet that I absolutely adore. And it was only $17 on Etsy! Check it out:

My new favorite (and budget friendly) hobby: transforming vintage Levi jeans into high-waisted denim shorts. After two trips to the Goodwill, I have accumulated quite an impressive wardrobe of cutoff shorts. It feels great to recycle clothes and bring an 80's dimension into my summer wardrobe.

About a month ago, I went wild with online shopping. After having my appendix removed and therefore being confined to a bed or couch for ten days, scouring the internet for new items was about all I was able to do. Luckily, I was up and about within two weeks to sport my finds. These are two of my newest, favoritest items: Urban Outfitters Ruffle Mini Dress and Seychelles Hawke Wedges.

This dress is unbelievably comfortable and flattering. And I lasted all night in these sky-high wedges while we celebrated darling Sam's 21st birthday. Moral of the story: some down time can lead to a great dress and perfect dancing shoes, adding up to an ideal outfit for ringing in 21 years with amazing friends. Who could ask for more?

Nostalgia & Inspiration.

Tonight, I found a treasure hiding in my desk: my high school sketchbook.

After flipping through the worn pages, I became nostalgic and envious of the days I was able to sit around, painting or drawing for hours. Seriously. That was the best part of my day. Sitting in Mrs. A's intermediate painting class was the most therapeutic, entertaining (it was impossible not to overhear a very dramatic male student's thoughts about his flavor of the week) and by far the quickest hour of my long school day.

After finding this treasure I started thinking about how important art and creativity are to me. While my future ambitions include working in the fashion industry, I have never seriously considered designing for a career. I'm not sure I have the patience to create fashion from thin air. But tonight's find reassured me that I need to find a career that encompasses both intellectual and creative input. I'd like to think that I use my creativity often, however I have not given the right side of my brain the exercise it was given in the past. School and work really do consume me!

I had an alarming realization tonight. After browsing for a pleated mini skirt and thinking about what I would want to wear it with, I realized.... that I create outfits that 1995's Clueless main character, Cher, would wear! Slightly alarming, slightly exciting. The first time I saw Clueless, like every other girl, I was instantly envious when Cher watched her clothes pass by in her rotating closet and generated outfits through her computer. Her perfectly, preppy outfits were darling, but oh-so-nineties. However, tonight, I realized that I re-create Cher inspired outfits quite often. Knee high socks with skirts? I love it.

This is exactly what I want for spring fashion, absolutely Clueless inspired.

A Long Delay

I have shunned MakingTee for the past month and I am so regretting it. I have compiled so many beautiful things that I want to share but I feel overwhelmed! After the holidays my life has been consumed with school, work, getting together with friends back from Europe, practicing french (I'm addicted), so getting around to posting has been difficult. However, midterms will be over soon and I can work MakingTee back into my schedule.

Until then, I have to share my most favorite, most spectacular, most thriftiest thrift ever! I recently dropped some old clothes off at the Goodwill and while walking through I found... a Theory blazer for $7.99 in absolute perfect condition! The best thrift ever? I'm not even going to try to be modest!

December Recap

It is really going to be 2011? My, the years are flying by! Not to mention the month of December was an absolute blur (see: finals, holiday shopping, extended hours at work, traveling, etc.). However now that most of the holiday hustle and bustle is settling down, I have had some time to appreciate the best parts of 2010. My time spent at home for Christmas was absolutely lovely, but far too short. Here are the highlights of my holiday:

What A Week.

I have to say... these past 9-10 days have been difficult. After losing my beloved grandmother last week every other negative event in my life has been amplified to the point where I was able to cry on demand. Such events included: Josie the Jeep going to mechanic heaven (and away from me) and finals week becoming "write as many papers as you can" week. Fortunately, this week is over in two days and then I can relax appropriately alongside my puppies, sisters, mama and pops.

While the past week has been trying, I have several things I am infinitely grateful for:

After losing my Grandma last week, my sister and I were given the opportunity to go through her clothes and take what we wished. This was like a dream come true for me. Searching through my Grandma's vintage clothes and taking whatever I wanted?? Yes, please! As I drove back to Santa Barbara last weekend with two HUGE bags full of my grandma's beautiful clothes in tow, I couldn't help but smile, shed a tear and remind myself of how lucky I was to bring a piece of her home with me. Definitely a positive spin on a rough weekend.

My mama. She sure knows how to cheer me up. While home last week she introduced me to the most amazing christmas store, that is stocked with pre-decorate, themed trees. There was a whole tree devoted to owls!

My aunt and cousins, who hooked me up with eyelash extensions. I have to say, them are am-az-ing. They are located in Santa Cruz and have great prices (about 1/4 of what you would be charged anywhere else). Their website is in the making but if you would like their contact information let me know!

So, in honor of one of the most inspiring and beautiful women I have met, I vow to let go of the stress and anxiety I have experienced this week (as Grandma deDiego always said "Take it one day at a time") and wear some of the most amazing vintage clothes I have ever come across. Let the Festivities Begin

Oh, the quarter system. So much quicker than the semester system. There is seriously zero time to slack, or for that matter, take a break. The past few weeks have been full of writing papers, making surveys, reading chapter after chapter, and then preparing to do it all over again. Luckily, I do get to take a physical break from Santa Barbara next week. Back home to Northern California I go on Tuesday for Thanksgiving break and I could not be more excited. It's the little things like playing with my puppies, cold weather, and seeing my mom and dad that make the holidays so great.

Can't wait to snuggle with Pip and Bella Lu!

This year Kate and I are planning on making big waves for Thanksgiving at our grandparents. Since we have both been following vegan diets for the past year (Kate has been longer... she's awesome), we are going to be making some new dishes that are equally delicious as they are healthy. So far I think we have agreed that these dishes are going to make an appearance:

candied yams
some wildly delicious salad with ridiculous amounts of veggies
cranberry chutney with cilantro and jalapeno (courtesy of Uncle Matty from last year)

We are still brainstorming, but I will be sure to post pictures of all our tasty dishes. You are all going to wish you were invited to the deDiego Thanksgiving events each year.

Also, my dad's side of the family has a tradition of going to dinner at a local mexican food restaurant, Little Tampico, and then hitting up the local bars for a night of fun the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and this year I get to go! Not completely legally, but we deDiego's know how to work magic (aka sister's ID). There are sure to be some classic stories and great pictures to come from this night. Stay tuned.

Meet My Pretty Friend.. and Pretty Jacket.

After weekends like the one just past, I wish that I could hang out with all of my best friends everyday, especially Kylee. We have been friend since 6th grade and although we now live in different cities and we are both constantly busy with work, school, or other projects, we do a pretty good job of staying in touch. After spending the weekend laughing, shopping, taking 20 minutes to make a single decision, and exploring LA, I couldn't help but think of how grateful I am that she and I quickly fall back into routine, even though we only see each other every month & half or so.

As always, Kylee and I went shopping in Santa Monica and did minor damage (but enough that I am living on canned food leftover in my pantry). It's dangerous when we shop together for the following reasons: (1) we have similar style, and are very good at sharing clothes so we convince each other to buy things, and (2) we are very good at rationalizing why we should spend X amount of dollars regardless of the bills we have to pay or the lack of gas in one of our cars. I think we would both agree that if we were millionaires, we would be the best dressed. :)

Anyways, while shopping in Santa Monica I scored a darling sequin jacket, perfect for work during the holidays and... our trip to Vegas! That's right! Kylee is turning 21 and we are off to Vegas in January and this sparkly stunner is definitely coming with.

So in the past ten days or so, I have seriously scored on free clothes that I adore. How about a free Joe's silk shift dress, and a silk Huit bra that is oh-so-precious and oh-so-out-of-my-price-range. Well thanks to my favorite roommate ;) and favorite co-worker, I scored. I have officially started my journey to Paris, France. The dreaming has finally turned into planning. I admit however, that it is not as lavish as it may sound. The actual turning point began with a trip to the UCSB EAP office, where I was bombarded with information about applications, housing, expectations, and deadlines. And although I had to hurry off to class, I am very excited that my journey has begun. Here are all of the things I will be dreaming about until August 2011... fantasies of course.

Being Thankful.

I'm not sure if it is widely known how difficult it is to be a college student who also works. It is exhausting. And yet also fulfilling. On a day like today, when I freaked out about the amount of school work I have to do in the next three weeks, my whole world seems really small. It is much easier to see the negative side of a situation when the weight of projects, deadlines, papers, and my work holiday schedule occupy my mind... constantly. However, after all of the dust has settled and it is time to start making a dent in that pile of work and stress, I have many things to be thankful for.

My sisters. B and Koop just know how to make me feel better. No matter what. And after having a little melt down about school work, internships, traveling abroad, and making money I can not express how reassuring it is to come home to a e-mail from Kate with a subject line that says "You Can Do It All". Thanks beebee. You mean the world to me.
Kate. Again. She not only helps me edit my papers but also guides me through my life when I can not see the light at the end of the tunnel. Without her I may never understand the expense of studying abroad, or whether the internship I apply to is legit or not. You deserve double thanks tonight Koop.

3. Youtube. A place where I can watch video after video of yellow lab and bernese mountain puppies sleep, play, talk, etc. Instant joy.

4. Aundrina's man who made pumpkin pie from scratch tonight. Seriously, he made it from a pumpkin. YUM!

5. Knee high socks. They rock. For day time with a skirt, and night time with sleep shorts. Yup, I love them that much.

Getting Hitched

Oh, Monday. You showed up so quickly. And after such an eventful weekend I am sad to say, I am not that happy to see you.

Top story: This weekend my manager from A Tropical Affair married her boyfriend of four years at Casa De La Guerra in the company of good friends and family from all over the country.

Sam and I worked all morning, anticipating the event, constantly reminding each other: "Ahhh! Geneva is getting married tonight!" and "3 more hours!". The morning hours rolled by slowly, due to excitement and a slight hangover (one of my best friends Christine made THE strongest margaritas EVER the previous night... goodness). Fortunately, by the time 4:30 rolled around I felt better; we slipped into our dresses, refreshed makeup in the fitting rooms, and were off to celebrate!
The ceremony started just as the sun set, in the beautiful courtyard of Casa De La Guerra. The site was tastefully decorated with paper flowers (made by the bride!), mexican blankets, and sparkly lights, while the tables offered sombreros, stick-on mustaches, and maracas! Needless to say we, the attendees, were entertained all night. Over the course of the night the girls and I enjoyed authentic mexican food (including freshly made sopes and churros), sipped delicious margaritas, and fought for the attention of the most darling man on the dance floor--the red-headed, two year old.

Geneva looked absolutely stunning as she walked down the aisle. She sported a darling A-line, mid-calf dress, adorned with pockets, and the most fabulous glitter-cover Kate Spade slingbacks. I couldn't help but tear up when I saw her. It was my first wedding that I have gone to that wasn't a family member so it felt especially meaningful. Mr. Ives is lucky to have such a lovely lady for a wife.

Highlights of the event:

The flower girl continued to spread flowers around the venue well after the ceremony was over.
We met and sat with a customer of the store who, ironically, is also being Katy Perry for Halloween. We bonded. She was hilarious and the girls and I agreed that she is definitely our favorite customer now.

My boss and her husband owning the dance floor. They are absolutely two of my favorite people.
Free sombreros!
Seeing Geneva party all night so that she would sleep easily on her way to Europe at 5am.

Catching Up

I think I need to play catch up. These past few weeks have held a lot of events that I have been super exciting for me.

Okay first, a big applaud to the Giants. This week we clinched the National League West champions title and are now moving on to play for a spot in the World Series (and if everything works out I might be able to go to a game). I'm elated. It has been far too long and the boys have finally shaped up. Grandpa and Dad say they will do it this year.

Next, the transfer to UCSB. Stoked. I absolutely loved my experience at city college but there is a feeling that can not compare when on a university campus. It's rad. Not to mention I might have the most killer professors. My Campaigns and College Drinking professor said these words when someone asked if we were having a final as it wasn't listed on the syllabus, "Oh yeah, no we're not. It was scheduled for a Saturday, so I said fuck that". Love her. Not to mention she is intelligent and teaches a class that is useful, fulfilling and stimulating. I digress. So glad to be at UCSB after two years of hard work. My list of must-take classes?

1. Studio art. I chatted with a girl in my feminist studies class who is a studio art major and I had an instant flashback of sitting in my high school art studio, listening to my ipod, and painting for the quickest hour of my day. If I could get school credit to sit in a studio for three straight hours, one day a week I might be the happiest girl ever. Cross your fingers that I can get into a class.

2. French. Hello?? I'm going to be in France one year from now! Gotta get practicing. Merci, oui, menage trois. That's all I've got at this point. ;)

3. More comm classes with Afifi. She is proving to be one of my favorite professors already. If any of you readers are comm majors at SBCC, she is the female version of Garard. So. Rad.

And last, but maybe most importantly, my puppies are visiting. They came to Santa Barbara with my sister on Sunday and are taking a full week vacation from my mom and stepdad. Their silly grins make my heart smile. How do I live without a dog on a day to day basis?

Shopping Therapy

After spending the last week in bed, dealing with a strange flu bug, I was elated to finally feel better today. Enough that I actually got dressed (buh-bye PJ's!) and put on makeup! Because it was just my birthday, I had accumulated a small fortune over the weekend from generous family members and friends, which I happily spent a nice portion of today. Say hello to my beautiful new boots that are going to keep my feet happy and warm throughout fall and winter!

Amongst generous sums of money, my friends and family members also treated me to breakfast, champagne, chocolate, sunflowers, and clothing. Oh, and a fish (see above, "her" name is Violet)! What more could I possibly ask for? Well, I have to admit I have a few items coming in the mail this week from online orders. More details and pictures to come this week!

On The Bright Side

Although I have been sick in bed for the past couple of days, I am taking this time to watch (and re-watch) all of my favorite old movies, like Let's Make Love, His Girl Friday, and The Awful Truth. I envy the women's wardrobes, filled with luxurious fur, head-to-toe beaded gowns, and diamond bib necklaces. The lifestyle of this period was so glamourous and elegant, and women were so graceful. I sometimes yearn for this type of sophistication (However, right now my sweats and old t-shirt are doing me well while I battle the flu!). I'll be resting today watching the ever-handsome Cary Grant charm many beautiful women.

In the coming months I have quite a few events that require a special dress: my birthday is in only a couple of days, my manager (and dear friend) from A Tropical Affair is getting married, and my roommate Mia is turning twenty one. Therefore, I have been browsing fall-appropriate party dresses and I may have found the winner. I am seriously digging flared sleeves this fall and this dress may take the cake. I'm thinking my black booties and bright jewelry will make this the ideal outfit for all occasions.

On A Whim..

The other day I was wasting time before meeting my sister, so I browsed through Forever21. It seems to me that when I am searching for a specific piece of clothing at Forever21, I can not find what I am looking for, yet when I casually browse through the racks there are numerous items I want to add to my wardrobe. How can such a huge store, filled with clothing so inexpensive play this devious trick on me? I digress. The point is I, of course, walked out with two items. But in my defense, they are darling. So here is the scoop:

1. Last winter Sonia Rykiel released her line for H&M, and a particular striped knit dress caught my eye. Seeing that I live in Santa Barbara and H&M does not have an online store, my next best option was to make a trip to L.A. I never made it to Los Angeles, however my twenty minutes of browsing through Forever21 supplied a skirt that is nearly identical to the dress.

Get Your Booties Ready.

Last year at this time, I was on the hunt for a pair of ankle booties. One of my dearest friends, Jaci, warned me that I should stick to a neutral color because booties were a fad that would eventually dissipate. I heeded her warning, as Jaci is a trustworthy fashion source, and bought a great pair of platform black ankle booties. I wore them all winter, with anything from tights and dresses, to jeans and casual basics. Now, as autumn prepares to make its appearance, there are a plethora of adorable ankle boots that I wouldn't mind adding to my shoe collection. Thank goodness ankle boots are sticking around, because I simply love them. The military influence on fall fashion is my absolute favorite trend thus far. Despite the neutral palette that makes up utility inspired pieces, each one makes a bold statement, even when paired with basics. 15 Minutes of Fame

Last Friday, I was given an amazing opportunity that reinforced my aspiration to become a fashion journalist. My editor at Society805 set up a one-on-one appointment for me to interview Kim Kardashian, at a "meet and greet" event in Camarillo. The socialite was promoting her signature fragrance and meeting some of her central coast fans. The experience was quite surreal, as journalists from OK Weekly and Life and Style Magazine interviewed Kim right before me. Despite my initial assumptions that I was going to be overcome with nerves, the interview went smoothly. Kim was not only focused and calm despite hundreds of screaming fans outside, but also personable and humble. She was dressed in an incredible Sass and Bide, nude strapless dress with black panelling and sky-high suede mary janes (check out Sass and Bide's lookbook on their website, every piece is incredible). Flawless.

Witnessing the security, photographers, devoted fans and paparazzi at work confirmed that the event was not just a figment of my imagination. I can only hope there are many more events like these to come. Stay tuned!

Adorable dress right?

To My Dad

Cheers to my dad on his 56th birthday!

My dad is a true gem. All of these years, he has been surrounded by women constantly and he still remains sane. Truly a feat, considering we ladies are quite a handful. I fondly remember him sitting through endless amounts of dance competitions, having to help make decisions about what shoes look better, and trying to decipher what all of the items on my Christmas list were. What a trooper!

Although I live in Santa Barbara now, my dad's love and support have never faltered. To this day I constantly hear: "Listen to your body" when it comes to working out, "Drink plenty of water and take some vitamins. You can take up to four a day!" when I am sick, and "I am so proud of you" when I am feeling down. Just the things you need to hear when you are away from home. :)

So, today Dad, I thank you for all of the Trader Joe's gift cards, the countless GIANT's games we have attended, the laugher you supply when you sing Earth, Wind and Fire or Roy Orbison, and the few hundred times you have checked the "vitals" in my car (let's face it, I'm not going to do it). You mean the world to me, and I love you forever.

Back to School Shopping

I'm not exactly sure that back to school shopping is allowed (or recommended) for college students on a budget, but, really... I can not help myself. I am so excited about fall fashion, it is actually putting a minor damper on the rest of my summer. Cozy sweaters, cognac boots, and colorful scarves are occupying my mind as I prepare for my first quarter at UCSB. Fall is just around the corner, and as I much as I don't want to wish away summer, I am starting to put together my must-haves for the coming season. Here is what I have compiled so far:

1. I'm digging the military influence on fall fashion this year. I hope to find a great pair of cargo, skinny jeans to wear with my new striped sweater. So far these ones are looking pretty good: Cargo Inspired Jeans

2. Blush pink is quickly becoming one of my absolute favorite colors to wear, and I am loving the shape of this casual sweater.

3. I imagine wearing this light weight cardigan to class with plenty of long, gold necklaces and light wash jeans.

The Pink Running Shoes

Just recently (about a week ago) my sister Katelyn moved to Santa Barbara. This is unbelievably good news for me and here is why:
1. She is a great cook. And she regularly makes me lunch and dinner!
2. She lives in a beautiful house that is much cleaner and much bigger than mine.
3. I love her. And now we get to spend A LOT of time together (Her roommates might be getting sick of me...).

Tonight she and I joined her new roommates for a 5k run that is put on by Nites Moves every Wednesday night in Santa Barbara. Not only is it a beautiful run, but it has the feel of a real race: an outlined course, a finish line with a clock, and lots of really fit runners!

But here is what really impressed me. Santa Barbara Running Co. has a kiosk at the end of the race where they have a neon sign that reads: "FREE SHOES". This is a phrase that makes my heart skip a beat. And it gets better. They have bright pink running shoes that I am sure would take minutes off of my time. So the process goes like this: sign your name on a sheet and become a "fan" of SB Running Co. on Facebook. You are then put into a drawing for a fitting and free pair of running shoes. Done and done. Lemme get those neon shoes. The nice guy that was running the booth told me they would announce the winner around 9pm on their Facebook account. Can't wait. I reminded my sister multiple times that I was sure to be the lucky one.

Because it is 10:40 pm you may be wondering, "Taylor, did you win those beautiful shoes?" I hate to report that tonight, I was not the chosen one. But I look at it this way: this is great motivation to keep going. Nite Moves meets three more times this summer and I WILL win the pink shoes. Can't wait to post the picture next week!

About a year ago my sisters let me in on a little ritual they practiced every morning to start their days in a positive spirit: e-mailing each other a list of five to ten things they were thankful for in their lives. After being let in on their daily e-mail chain, I was hooked. I was able to think of twenty things I was thankful for quicker than ever before. So after an extended break from announcing my "thankful thankfultons", as my sister Brooke would say, I am bringing them back. And glad to be, as I have much to be thankful for. So here they are:

Today I am thankful for:
1. My heating mattress pad that my mom gave me for Christmas. Sure southern California is never that cold but it does come in handy when we have the winter weather we are experiencing right now. Thunder, lightning and rain can't stop me from me being warm!

2. My dear friend Christine helping me make coconut macaroons last night. SO. DELICIOUS.

3. My sister Katelyn introducing me to many delicious recipes and teaching me healthy eating tips. Without her I might be ten, unwanted pounds heavier.

4. My boss letting me wear my pink rainboots all day today at work. I guess it was casual/comfy day at work because of all the yucky weather.

5. My healthy, functioning body.

6. Clean water and a warm house. After hearing about all of the people struggling in Haiti it is good to acknowledge even the most basic of necessities.

I am happy to have thankfuls back for 2010. I feel confident that I will have a lot to be thankful for this year. More to come later!

We're Going to the Circus!

After five relaxing days of snuggling with my puppies, reading my new book and spending time with my family at home, I am well rested and back in Santa Barbara. A perfect way to end my very long winter break.

While I spent most of my time inside due to northern California's stormy winter weather, my family and I did bare the cold one evening to venture into San Francisco. In accordance with what I named "French Week", my mom and step dad generously treated my sister and I to third row seats to see Cirque Du Soleil: Ovo, which is currently touring the bay area. Words can not accurately portray the unbelievable performance that we watched that evening, but if I had to give it my best shot I would say this: I would forfeit all movie watching rights in exchange for monthly tickets to see Cirque Du Soliel. Maybe even bi-monthly. After every segment of the two hour show, my jaw dropped, my stomach clenched and I became a sudden believer in magic. Not only did the performers make the physically impossible happen, they also put on an excellent theatrical show. Each performer was adorned in beautifully ornate costumes and never once stepped out of character. Truly an amazing show that I highly recommend. Not to mention a new form of entertainment that I can add to my list of "activities tried" for 2010. And a great way to kick off "French Week".

After a wonderful week spent laughing, snuggling and keeping warm from the winter weather I am glad to be back in Santa Barbara, gearing up for spring semester. As always I am already missing my sister's offer to make breakfast, my dad's espresso machine and my mom's bear hugs, but I am excited to welcome in my last semester at city college and make it the best yet!

New Years Resolutions

Welcome to what is to become my new favorite hobby: Making Tee. With the change of the decade and a promising new year I have decided to start a blog that will document my experiences as I work to accomplish my new years resolutions. So, here I go.

This year, 2010, I have made two new years resolutions:

· 1. to think positively of myself and the people around me, and

· 2. to begin to uncover my real self (I have always been inspired by a quote by David Harold Fink: “Know what you want. Become your real self", readily available on my Facebook page's favorite quotes section)

I’m not sure if it is the new year, or the gradual aging that has fallen upon me but I am now, more than ever, ready to try new things and find what I am truly passionate about. I figure blogging will serve as trying something new while I record the things I am learning about myself over the course of this year (which I have high hopes for J). So to begin, here are the things I have discovered about myself since January 1^st:

First, I have a serious addiction to buying clothes, lingerie, accessories, shoes, house wares, antiques, craft supplies… and the list continues. Essentially, I am addicted to shopping. When I am not physically shopping in local stores and boutiques, I am shopping online. And when I am not shopping online I am making virtual purchases in my mind. I think it is a sickness and being a college student, it might be fatal.

Second, I actually DO like cooking. I just discovered that when following a recipe I CAN cook and really do enjoy the entire process. While I was home at my mom’s house during the holidays I had three successful cooking experiences: a roasted vegetable pasta salad, delicious cranberry orange cookies and delicious popover pastries! Who knew I could cook and actually make something worth eating??

Third, I have the courage to live abroad. And I am elated about my plans to study in France during 2011. The idea of living in Paris has occupied my mind since my family visited France some years ago, but just recently have I committed to actually manifesting my fantasy into reality. After talking about study abroad experiences over coffee with my sisters one morning, I have made plans to study through the EAP center in Paris, France during my senior year of college. Since that morning I have been daydreaming daily about my Parisian life waiting for me in 2011. I do not think this will be good for my shopping addiction.

To continue exploring what excites me and tests my courage, I am vowing to try new activities, foods, books, trends, etc. to uncover my true self. I figure that with a change of decade and many changes in my life this year it is a perfect time to explore myself and find out what I truly love. I can’t wait to see what comes!
